What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic, non-curable, long term - inflammatory disease of airways (bronchial tubes). Some people get confused between COPD and Asthma. Although the symptoms are common in both but asthma is different from COPD. COPD is short form of ‘chronic obstructive pulmonary disease’. In Hindi Asthma is known as ‘dama’ and ‘Swas Rog’ in Ayurveda. Air flows in and out from our lungs through bronchial tubes. Due to inflammation, muscles around the airways become tight and swollen. Airways become narrower. Swelling, tightness and narrowing of airways causes less air to flow into the lungs. Asthma patients react badly when they inhale something. During Asthma attacks airways cells generate extra mucus (thick sticky liquid). This mucus further aggravates narrowing of bronchial tubes.
